VAT Exemption guidelines

Medical Exemption VAT Relief explained
Certain products that are sold on our site, according to HMRC rules, can be VAT exempt for the purchaser.

These products must fit both of the following criteria for the VAT exemption to apply:

1) They must have been designed by the manufacturer solely for the use of
people with a long term chronic medical condition.

2) They must be purchased by or for an individual to use for their long term
chronic medical condition

Diabetes is classed as a long term chronic medical condition. For more
information on what qualifies as a long term chronic medical condition please
refer to the gov.uk site : https://www.gov.uk/financial-help-disabled/vat-relief

With the above rules in mind:
Examples of products that would be VAT exempt on our site include: Frio
cooling Wallets, Pump pouches, Dia Wipes, Skin Tac, Patches for sensors and pumps,
diabetic spi belts. These products have all been designed by the manufacturer specifically
for people with Diabetes

Examples of products that would not qualify include: Non diabetic spi belts, some of our
awareness products, some sports gels/juices, pocket pod. These products have not been
designed by the manufacturer solely for people with a chronic medical condition. Although they are popular products with people with diabetes and widely used by our community, for the VAT to be applied the product must also be designed solely for this purpose.

If someone without Diabetes or another qualifying long term chronic medical condition buys products, but wished to use them personally, then the VAT exemption must not be claimed. If someone without a qualifying medical condition buys a product for someone with a long term medical condition, then they may apply the VAT exemption.

This is just a brief overview of the rules surrounding medical VAT exemption. For full details
